Description: Sadao Watanabe was born and grew up in Tokyo. He was a Japanese printmaker in the 20th Century. Watanabe was famous for his biblical prints rendered in the mingei (folk art) tradition of Japan. The subject matter of Watanabe’s prints is exclusively the gospel. Influenced by Buddhist figure prints, Watanabe placed biblical subjects in a Japanese context. Saint Francis raises his hand in blessing focusing his eyes on the birds, composed in three rows, seek to touch his ears and hands.
