Description: Sadao Watanabe was born and grew up in Tokyo. He was a Japanese printmaker in the 20th Century. Watanabe was famous for his biblical prints rendered in the mingei (folk art) tradition of Japan. The subject matter of Watanabe’s prints is exclusively the gospel. Influenced by Buddhist figure prints, Watanabe placed biblical subjects in a Japanese context. A remarkable image, on geometric ground, the horses are vital and beautifully described – naturalistic, yet fantastic in their decoration; each is markedly offset, yet they coordinate, as do the birds, that add a touch of humor to this strong, impressive composition.
