Sadao Wantanabe was born and grew up in Tokyo. He was a Japanese printmaker in the 20th Century.
Wantanabe was famous for his biblical prints rendered int he mingei (folk art) tradition of Japan.
The subject matter of Wantanabe’s prints is exclusively the gospel. Influenced by Buddhist figure prints, he placed biblical subjects in Japanese context. Wantanabe used Momigami (kneaded paper) for his prints, he used the katazome organic mineral pigments in a medium of soybean milk. The protein in the milk bound the colors to the papers surface.
